Frequently asked questions

Why book direct via the Blue Trailz website?


We offer the lowest available rates including all taxes! While, other booking sites might display rates without taxes, and they might even charge you a deposit and extra fees. We do not charge you any fees when you reserve your stay with us via our secure booking tool. On top of that we offer a personal service and exlusive deals. So book now! We are very thankful of the excellent service that booking platforms provide, and we are of course excited when guests find us through these various search engines. But this service comes at a price, and that is the commissions that are charged to us on each booking made which are usually in the range of 10-20% of the total stay.




Reserving my Hostel stay at Blue Trailz?


Use our secure online booking tool to reserve your Shared Dorm or Private Room. Keep your credit card at hand, as you will need it to guarantee your reservation, however we will not charge you at the time of the reservation. The availability in the booking tool is up to date, so if it doesn't show availability we are already fully booked for the requested dates.




Difference between Surf Camp and Luxury Surf Vacation?


Both Surf Camps and Luxury Surf Vacations include surf lessons or coached surf trips with skilled Blue Trailz instructors for beginner/novice surfers or intermediate/advanced surfers respectively. The main difference however, is the accommodation; the luxury surf vacation comes with accommodation in one of our 4-star partner hotels (Esplendor or Jardin Del Eden, whereas the surf camps include a stay at our Blue Trailz hostel either in a shared dorm room or private room. Do I need to pay a deposit?


No deposit required for hostel stays and surf camp packages, we will just take your credit card details as a guarantee, and you can pay your bill upon check out. Our Luxury Surf Vacations require a 20% deposit upon reservation. When you book one of our Offers and Promotions, we will charge your credit card for the full amount upon reservation. We accept all major credit cards as well as cash payments in US dollar or Costa Rican Colones. We do not accept Paypal.




What is your cancellation policy?


For all reservations made via www.bluetrailz.com, all cancellations and changes must be made via e-mail to reservations@bluetrailz.com. Late cancellations, no show and early departure do incur a fee in line with our terms and conditions. Click here for a full overview of our terms and conditions for direct bookings made on our website. If you made a booking via one of the online travel sites (e.g. hostelworld, booking.com, expedia, orbitz,...) the policy you accepted at the time of your booking will apply, please contact the online travel agent directly for changes or cancellations to your reservations. Please note that the policies mentioned on our website do not apply to reservations made via any other website then www.bluetrailz.com




What time is check-in?


Check-in is from 2 pm. Please have your passport and credit card available to complete the process. Early check-in can not be guaranteed, but might be possible subject to your room or bed being available. We offer luggage storage, changing facilities, an outside shower and a restroom for your use in case you arrive before your room is ready. Our shop, which doubles as a reception, is open between 7 am and 7 pm. If you arrive outside of these hours, our night guard will let you in and show you to your room. Please come and see us the following morning before 10 am to complete the paperwork.




What time is check-out?


Check-out time is at 10 am. If you are planning to leave later, you can store your luggage in our shop. If you are leaving before 7.30 am, please make sure to settle up your bill before 6.30 pm the day before.




Do you offer free Internet?


Yes, we do offer free WIFI for our guests and it is available in our common areas. You might have limited WIFI availability in the rooms.




Which currency do I need?


YesVirtually all businesses accept major credit cards and payment in USD or local Costa Rican Colones. You can find a number of banks in town with ATM machines which allow you to get both USD and Colones. If you want to exchange money, be sure to bring your passport to the bank.




Is it safe to drink tap water?


Yes, without a doubt, our tap water is drinkable and safe. However, if you prefer, you can buy bottled water from one of the supermarkets.




Where can I get food?


Tamarindo has a great range of bars and restaurants all in walking distance from Blue Trailz, and we are happy to show to the best options when you are here. We also have a small supermarket across the street and some largers ones couple of minutes walk away if you want to make your own meals.




Do you have lockers or a safe? ​


We do have lockers available for our guests in the dorms and the private rooms come with a safe, in addition we have a safe in our shop, which doubles as reception, where you can leave your passport and other small valuables. In addition, there is no need to bring a lock for your locker. We always recommend you to safely store your valuables in your locked lockers or safe and keep an eye on your belongings wherever you are.




Do I need travel insurance?


Travelling wouldn’t be fun without surprises. But sometimes the unexpected leaves you whimper in a hospital bed when you should be surfing or exploring the jungle. Injuries, illnesses, and even spewing volcanoes can tear up your perfect itinerary. And that’s where travel insurance can save you from distress – or at least from some of the costs, depending on the policy you buy. Blue Trailz recommends World Nomads, since this is what we use when we travel. Get yours here!




Where is the bus stop?


The bus stop is literaly next to Blue Trailz, so once you get to Tamarindo ask your driver to stop at Villa Amarilla (our neighbor across the street) or at Alamo rent a car (our next door neighbor).




How do I get to Blue Trailz from the airport?


The easiest and most convenient way to get from either Liberia (LIR) or San Jose (SJO) airport to Blue Trailz is by shuttle which will drop you off right at our door step. Note that San Jose is about 4-5hrs away, and Liberia airport about 1 hour. Once you have booked your stay with us via our website, your reservation confirmation contains a link to our page where you can request your shuttle so that we can reserve it for you. What are the opening hours for your reception?


Our Blue Trailz shop, which doubles as reception, is open from 7 am till 7 pm. If you are planning to arrive after 7 pm and you have a reservation our night guard who is on duty till 2am will have the key to your room and will let you in. If you don't have a reservation but we do have space our night guard will show you to the available private room or dorm. You will have to check in the next morning before 10 am.




How do I get to Blue Trailz?


Tamarindo is a major destination in Costa Rica, so you can get here by public bus, shuttle services, rental car or even by plane with one of the local airlines. And in addition we are located on the main street in Tamarindo, so very easy to get to. Let us know where you will be coming from and we can explain the options and even book your transport. Do you offer laundry service?


Yes, absolutely. For US$5 we will wash your clothes.




Do you offer breakfast?


Unfortunately, we don't offer breakfast. However, our private rooms have their own kitchen and our guests in the dorm rooms have access to a communal kitchen, so you can prepare your own breakfast and meals.

In addition, as a Blue Trailz guest, you will get a 10% discount at Cafe Santa Rita (located next door) when you show them your Blue Trailz bracelet. For sure you will enjoy their amazing smoothies, coffees, breakfast and lunch choices.




Does my room have AC and hot shower?


Yes all our rooms, dorm and private rooms, come with airconditioning and hot showers!




Do you have a fridge to store my food?


Yes all our rooms, shared dorm and private rooms, have their own fridge.
